We're already planning our next trip and trying to figure out if we can and why we want to stay home for 1 1/2 months! In one place for a whole month!! We're in Bakersfield now for the night and will be back home tomorrow afternoon.<br /></div><div><div><div align="justify"><br /></div><div align="justify">Our last night in Petaluma was spent with two overnight guests... yeah, Tess and Rennie. We went to Train Town and Fun-ky Monkey yesterday. It was a busy day! We're in our 60's and they are 4 and 6... but we all ended up the same... tired!! We met Kate and handed over the kids about 10am and hit the road home!! Thanksgiving Day, Opa stood watched while Tess and Rennie rode their bikes....Please note Tess' finery. She dresses herself. I love the pearls! Perfect for bike riding. </div><p>Friday we 4 went to a farm for pony rides. Well, Tess & Rennie rode. I was kinda jealous. I wanted to ride, too! They also got to meet and pet guinea pigs, bunnies, a rooster named Jack, goats and Pepper the donkey who loves to have the inside of his ears rubbed. We had a wonderful day yesterday with Ned and Heather driving around Lake Tahoe - Incline Village, Emerald Bay, etc. We stopped in Incline for lunch and to look up a bakery that is run by a girl that Hans and Ned went to school with... her brothers, actually. Unfortunately it is not opened on weekends. Also, Ned & Heather were married at Lake Tahoe, Zephry Cove. When I was here for the wedding I didn't have time to see the lake. Sunny! Clear blue, blue sky! Just gorgeous! The perfect day to enjoy one of Utah's many, many wonders!! We went to Fremont Indian Park to see the petroglyphs. It is a beautiful place and, like most of Utah, not crowded. We hiked (with the 3 fur balls) about 1.5 miles up the hill and back. The trip up the hill was somewhat difficult. We all had to scramble up the rocks. Thank heavens we were <em>only</em> about 6000+ feet above sea level. Ahh, smell the fresh air. Oops, is that cat we smell - like big cat? Tiger was the first to decide to get back down the hill and FAST!!<br /><br />Sometimes the petroglyphs are hard to spot and some have been damaged. (Why would someone do that!! What's the saying, "Half the fun is getting there." Well, John takes that seriously and asked Google for the scenic route. We wound up on an ATV trail on a somewhat iffy "road". Gotta say that little Prius takes whatever it is handed to do and just goes. (This was not our 1st backroad adventure!) Since our intent was to take a horseback tour of the park and the horses were out to pasture for the season, I guess the jostling up and down on the "trail" in the Prius was a fitting replacement. <br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ2xdfxUAX1IPccMtdJOUaZrEjmGxN6RgyTJ5Lr-ARzyjzB5HiQn9TVDQPr3B4Z31z_4Uw41wdlAHwc0lxA0JFuWa-aWofNQ7PIQwbp0x837bSjLYFguy48VyJ3Co4euLQ3aoiOfvJvzSM/s1600-h/Bryce+Arch.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270637392216379682" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ2xdfxUAX1IPccMtdJOUaZrEjmGxN6RgyTJ5Lr-ARzyjzB5HiQn9TVDQPr3B4Z31z_4Uw41wdlAHwc0lxA0JFuWa-aWofNQ7PIQwbp0x837bSjLYFguy48VyJ3Co4euLQ3aoiOfvJvzSM/s320/Bryce+Arch.jpg" border="0" /></a> The is no way we can describe the beauty of Bryce Canyon. This is where we are! A not-so-bustling town of 5,000+/-... The RV camp is smack in the middle of corn fields. Actually we're enjoying our stop-over here! Reasonably quiet (we can hear trains only way off in the distance) and nice people. Well, the quiet part the pooches would argue about as it is hunting season and there are the somewhat frequent gunshots - which is perfect for a former frontier cattle town! We spent a few hours sightseeing today and visited the Mansion on the Hill, a Victorian home built in 1887 and definitely out of place among the more rough n'ready elements of Ogallala at that time. (Probably now, too!!) We didn't see inside as it is closed for the season. (A lot of places don't expect tourists in the winter.) We also visited Boot Hill. Yep, there's a reason for the name...cowboys were buried with their boots <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSxbuD26lkqU4UjX71qmuNdVzA8C534ek3viEWDHvXf2MH6YZMFonH6Ob5mn6cHIA0cf775GOonTJko7A6SVa6FQTzHoTy73y0co-YVTrmF-l2K4dd3VC_t5pZKOw-GRBw5D15x8EFLtl9/s1600-h/Mansion+on+the+Hill+Cropped.jpg"></a>on! Most of the remains have actually been moved to the Ogallala Cemetery, but there are a large sculpture and the original wooden <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYtu0IRs7XUofQbOVYHAtqXPeZ0tCOROqs-_BMaWfpwPy3cX1QBMMgg0tcJcFy26cSDg8uZRl5roo4PT7OeRLjqIz14XmslKcWcEgduV3oynbUxD2fC6-HqKD9kds02lolliD3okCtQA9W/s1600-h/Mansion+on+the+Hill+Cropped.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266808884104049602" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 213px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYtu0IRs7XUofQbOVYHAtqXPeZ0tCOROqs-_BMaWfpwPy3cX1QBMMgg0tcJcFy26cSDg8uZRl5roo4PT7OeRLjqIz14XmslKcWcEgduV3oynbUxD2fC6-HqKD9kds02lolliD3okCtQA9W/s320/Mansion+on+the+Hill+Cropped.jpg" border="0" /></a>gravestones marking the site. And, a time capsule to be checked on in 2034 and opened in 2084. Two bottles of whiskey are in the capsule, one to be opened in 2034 and the other in 2084. Evidently Boot Hill was a pretty busy place as Ogallala was considered the "Gomorrah of the Plains." We finally got out of the Cummins repair bay and headed to a KOA RV Camp. We are planning to stay here a day or two, depending on weather. It is raining, cold and very windy. Snow is on its way!! We had to go buy Tiger a sweater (beige turtleneck, very tasteful) as he was shivering. Tinkerbell and Ginger are not as cold as their fur is thicker. We will find them coats too as they are very jealous of Tiger's new look. Imagine the picture of the tow truck towing a 42-ft RV and a dolly down an interstate!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqGzScZOo5czQkbeQD3qHZhLdVYRL7dEskyqyeMR2hCm5Pfl55wEkUxYKajiWysURNr6BTnhxHUFsoPOuMf65WHBv46N0iZKh-oGkKBiu45d7t_K2Zjb6cQD4sqUQahydX4GPUS8e6z-SW/s1600-h/Tow+Away+in+Rock+Port.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5265586723278493714" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 256px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqGzScZOo5czQkbeQD3qHZhLdVYRL7dEskyqyeMR2hCm5Pfl55wEkUxYKajiWysURNr6BTnhxHUFsoPOuMf65WHBv46N0iZKh-oGkKBiu45d7t_K2Zjb6cQD4sqUQahydX4GPUS8e6z-SW/s320/Tow+Away+in+Rock+Port.jpg" border="0" /></a></div><br /><p class="mobile-photo" align="justify">We went through a tornado warning, severe thunderstorm, and HEAVY rain to get to Omaha. As you can see there are only 3 of us left here. This is the last week this RV camp will be open. It has been an "interesting" place. Missouri is generally flat - well, to us.</p><p align="justify">We're here to visit Kathleen's son Hans and his wife Andrea. We're parked in a beautiful spot along the river, but the train tracks are less than 100 feet from our front door. And, the trains go by all the time, day and night! We were "boon docking" which means we are using our own water supply and there are no sewer hook-ups. (But, we do have 30amp power.) That means we take short showers and no running the washer, dryer or dishwasher. Kind of like camping, but with a comfy bed! </p><p align="justify">Please note another fabulous parking job by Kathleen. </p><p></p>Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06330589888416125840noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4026392912924093065.post-1290409004789573792008-10-30T17:34:00.000-07:002009-02-17T17:39:56.600-08:00Eureka Springs, AR<p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlAx9sBl8g5_epXKQhkvV86CCzbl2DCkdpf7YX0cKCDE2B-DtIrG56UXp_PnJ7BJZiKdk5PIh8kafVAgrKnMRQaXYfiQx9LtltTEqw4ijv-jME5wd7f7yFr72aTqTsuv57BEpm2_RuW00/s1600-h/Photo_103008_001-771883.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlAx9sBl8g5_epXKQhkvV86CCzbl2DCkdpf7YX0cKCDE2B-DtIrG56UXp_PnJ7BJZiKdk5PIh8kafVAgrKnMRQaXYfiQx9LtltTEqw4ijv-jME5wd7f7yFr72aTqTsuv57BEpm2_RuW00/s320/Photo_103008_001-771883.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263110359243767522" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFfnNUrPc1uaHRY3BVE2D8k79wzD91Nhyg0zlWtTgHMVyEFlGFSJ89PfQUTL96sPnVYoX07TcXfxzs_qP3wLFpFd-xACCBS-oiBuoMhBHPn_Hjf0p1ULhSFb4Hmg-0MX2vImwRsDzk2m0/s1600-h/Photo_103008_002-773060.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFfnNUrPc1uaHRY3BVE2D8k79wzD91Nhyg0zlWtTgHMVyEFlGFSJ89PfQUTL96sPnVYoX07TcXfxzs_qP3wLFpFd-xACCBS-oiBuoMhBHPn_Hjf0p1ULhSFb4Hmg-0MX2vImwRsDzk2m0/s320/Photo_103008_002-773060.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5263110364342247458" /></a></p>Beautiful drive, but not for the RV. too much to see for a couple of hours. He was interested in this site because of a biography about Jim Bowie he read when he was 12 and, compounded by his Texas upbringing, the blacksmith shop was a must see! We did learn that most of the "history" of Jim Bowie is non-factual. He was a "businessman" who was involved with maybe a few shady deals, but not the brawler he was portrayed to be. He was also a really big guy - over 6 feet - and, along with his really big knife, he cowed a lot of local toughs who thought about taking him on. Actually the Mexicans at the Alamo had a hard time putting him down although he was already on his death bed. They had to stand at a distance and use their bayonnets to kill him. He took out any who tried to get any closer. Anyway, the local blacksmith John Black is the person who made the first Bowie knife on commission by Jim Bowie per Bowie's design.</p><p align="justify">Actually, we lollygagged around until noon and then started out for Washington, AK! (Eat your hearts out, you 9 to 5 people!!) It is a town of 138 people and is a AK State Park - a museum village - 9 miles NW of Hope, AK!! (So I'm figuring Hope must be at least 200 people.) We ate lunch at Williams' Tavern established in 1832. My 2nd or 3rd time trying chicken fried steak and white gravy and probably my last. It tasted like it was cooked in 1832, but then it tasted that way the other times I've tried it! There is nothing to recommend this Southern speciality! Nor the turnip greens John had as a side.</p><p align="justify">First we toured the town in a surrey pulled by 2 white mules named Jane and Mattie. And, I will wisely leave that statement to stand on its own. (White, mules, women... do it yourself!) Then we toured the blacksmith shop and the Block-Catts House. It was built by a Jewish fellow (Abraham Block) in 1832 who hailed originally from Bohemia and came to AK via New Orleans. The father of 10 girls and 2 sons he built this Federal style home and it has 5 rooms!! The upstairs has a boys' room and a girls' with a large hall where Martha the house slave stayed and acted as referee! Downstairs had a large dining room and living/master bedroom, plus a small home office/bathing room. Actually the rooms are all good sized! The kitchen was a separate building that also housed the other 10+ slaves. It is really quite pretty. </p><p align="justify">Up the street from that is the largest magnolia tree in N. America. It is HUMUNGOUS!!! It was planted in 1839! This tree is just huge and grows out into the street. Needless to say, no one is clammering to trim it back. Although not in season, we did see one lone magnolia bloom on the tree. The town also boasts one of the oldest pecan trees in the US (200 years and in Abraham Block's back yard) and one of the oldest catawba trees (about 150 years). Southerners love the catawba tree. It gets attacked yearly by some worm that makes great fishing bait and Southerners are koo-koo about fishing!</p><p align="justify"></p><blockquote><p align="justify"></p></blockquote>Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06330589888416125840noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4026392912924093065.post-73759564678492691172008-10-28T07:51:00.000-07:002009-02-17T17:39:56.616-08:00Lovely Site<p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS5F8-tFGjSRsabFn4qRj9Zul-goVn2xvk9YjoUIvTrNWEvVvL8-vOA2SWMdl722OgvFAD1hDsRCSvq0H420tgM60R9hI25CMFDDOK8bo5l7THZ6yhv53ZqS3X8XdBL8G8Wgin4s2o16s/s1600-h/PA270363-703372.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS5F8-tFGjSRsabFn4qRj9Zul-goVn2xvk9YjoUIvTrNWEvVvL8-vOA2SWMdl722OgvFAD1hDsRCSvq0H420tgM60R9hI25CMFDDOK8bo5l7THZ6yhv53ZqS3X8XdBL8G8Wgin4s2o16s/s320/PA270363-703372.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262220580128197826" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUZcQ3HECNoaZZwlXLrAHZB5qWm-6iK7-iPNJu_8pgouZKyBGyc9CU4qqGWYznbAkHApka9apsys7_agKmFmdXQltJnKR3dCx0YK6lRgruWurV6tFrMiaM0xfEzb-i2hkyO1EYNlch4rA/s1600-h/PA270362-706321.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUZcQ3HECNoaZZwlXLrAHZB5qWm-6iK7-iPNJu_8pgouZKyBGyc9CU4qqGWYznbAkHApka9apsys7_agKmFmdXQltJnKR3dCx0YK6lRgruWurV6tFrMiaM0xfEzb-i2hkyO1EYNlch4rA/s320/PA270362-706321.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5262220592395687970" /></a></p><div class=Section1> <p class=MsoNormal>Beautiful place to park in the trees, and a great parking job by Kathleen<o:p></o:p></p> <p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p> </div> Johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06330589888416125840noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4026392912924093065.post-3771188570870566872008-10-27T09:42:00.000-07:002009-02-17T17:39:56.622-08:00Diamond Mining<p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcdG41VtD2DP9amGX_OKEjj0pFapca0oPor79lWqXAMjv2T5L6XFoshP4OAjZQYHQdZcNagbRBoMxgtglK5152BzFtsIuZZlQbArdn04XHA0nG9zHuU6o8OcrRsBa9SgXvn-q24TXHUIU/s1600-h/Photo_102708_001-728540.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcdG41VtD2DP9amGX_OKEjj0pFapca0oPor79lWqXAMjv2T5L6XFoshP4OAjZQYHQdZcNagbRBoMxgtglK5152BzFtsIuZZlQbArdn04XHA0nG9zHuU6o8OcrRsBa9SgXvn-q24TXHUIU/s320/Photo_102708_001-728540.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261876226357328978" /></a></p><p class="mobile-photo"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiymq8XFI_J6D5n8FtHKxE0lCptnDVhrvnMq2KJ8mwHwfjRPbgMkRzgmQma9nfazn12s5ooN5cDW9ck4O6XNGNcZjHggKmF0-GNIUMeNqGtd3Nv2oeNAf5vRssAXjGF03gCfLQVFJxiIn0/s1600-h/Photo_102708_002-730379.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiymq8XFI_J6D5n8FtHKxE0lCptnDVhrvnMq2KJ8mwHwfjRPbgMkRzgmQma9nfazn12s5ooN5cDW9ck4O6XNGNcZjHggKmF0-GNIUMeNqGtd3Nv2oeNAf5vRssAXjGF03gCfLQVFJxiIn0/s320/Photo_102708_002-730379.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261876233736709234" /></a></p>it was cold, even in the sun<p>JohnJohnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06330589888416125840noreply@blogger.com0
